I absolutely love going to Latta Plantation. The staff at the nature center is helpful, if you encounter a ranger, they have stories to tell, and I enjoy the trails. They have long 6 mile trails or 1 mile trails which are perfect if you want a quick run. My dog loves it too!

Latta Plantation Park is great for kayaking, hiking, picnicking, and just hanging out in nature. It's on the outskirts of Huntersville and borders Mountain Island Lake (just south of the damn from Lake Norman). There's a great spot to launch a kayak or canoe. There's plenty to see from the water without the big boats in Lake Norman to the North. There are miles of trails. The Carolina Raptor Center is found within the park as well as an old historic home and an equestrian center.

One of my absolute favorite places. I have been hiking and trail running in this park hundreds of times over the past few years and I still find something new to see or find each visit. There are a large variety of trails and environments to explore. Many diverse landscapes to see as well as many lake view overlooks scattered throughout. The trails cross over each other frequently so it's very easy to create loops and hikes of the perfect length. Also keeps things interesting since you can always try a new path each visit.

We visited just the Plantation. The setting is very simple and rustic. There is a small museum and gift shop, the main plantation house, some out buildings and a few animals. Nothing fancy. We had an hour before our tour of the plantation house and it took about that much time to see the property at a casual pace. The ground is mostly flat and walking is minimal, but I bet it gets real HOT in the summer...so come prepared with water. Honestly, the out buildings are a bit mangy as are the animals. And there is not al lot of info on the property. The museum has more info which helps. We might have been disappointed with the experience except that the tour of the plantation house was great. A bit rushed by our guide perhaps, but very informative and he really put the house in context with its owners and the surrounding area. The Latta Plantation is worth a visit for those interesting in understanding a small but interesting chunk of Charlotte's history
