After you are comfortable with everything, you set off on a 2-hour drive at the wheel of our Renault Twizy through the alternative streets of discovering Lisbon. Your first stop is Intendente! Once a junkies and prostitutes land is now converted to one of the hippest places in town. Genuine streets and alleys are filled with mingled voices of one hundred different idioms that echo through the century-old walls of the ancient palaces and buildings. Together with Martim Moniz square, Lisbon shows the heart of multiculturalism and integration.
This is a city where people can mix freely. It’s something you rarely experience in a capital, but fits neatly with the collaborative, outward-looking nature of Lisbon scene.
Carry on through the streets of Baixa-Chiado until you reach Bairro Alto, the city's bohemian haunt of artists and writers. Its grid of streets is quiet during the day, where you can still find the local residents hanging their clothes to dry but at night is transformed into Lisbon vibrant nightlife quarter, where people from all ages and backgrounds are hopping from bar to bar with a drink in hand.
The party in Lisbon may begin in Bairro Alto, but it usually ends in Pink Street, locally known as Rua Cor-de-Rosa. Once the meeting point for sailors, prostitutes and local criminals, it gain an unsavory reputation long ago. However, the scandalous buildings have turned into works of art and Lisbon’s “Red Light District” is long gone. The Pink Street left it is brighter than ever!
Move on to Santos Design District, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Lisbon. It’s actually called Santos-O-Velho (Santos, the old). Perched on a hill facing the river, Santos is home to a kaleidoscope of art aficionados, architects and designers. Lisbon’s Museum of Ancient Art is one of the things to do in the Santos neighborhood you should not miss. You can park for free and enjoy the gorgeous garden overlooking the 25th of April bridge and Cristo-Rei.
Your journey ends at LX Factory. Once a fabric and threads company has been completely taken over by creatives and start-ups rising as the beacon for street art in Lisbon. Remember to park and share the amazing pictures you are going to take! Breath in fashion and arts in the Portuguese version of Andy Warhol The Factory.
