This is undoubtedly one of the must-see, magnificent walks along the Laurissilva of Madeira, where you can appreciate the unique vegetation of this UNESCO natural heritage.
What to expect?
Stop at: Levada Do Reí, São Jorge, Madeira, Madeira Islands
The Levada do Rei or Ribeiro Bonito was built by order of King D. Carlos I in the late 19th century to irrigate the fields of São Jorge and feed the existing water mills and sawdust. It is an easy walk, with a wide and accessible esplanade. Along the way, we observe the transition from a forest of invasive alien species, to the indigenous forest of Madeira: the Laurissilva (World Heritage since 1992 - UNESCO).
