R. do Anjo 15, 4810-225 Guimarães, Portugal
Not worth visiting during the day unless in the area of course. In which case it's nice to see the place where the army set off to unite most of modern day Portugal. The town is lovely though and the castle and Barons Palace nearby are very nice.
The landmark you cannot miss. Translation: Portugal was born here
It is a wall with the words Aqui Nasceu Portugal written high up. The wall looks like either the battlements of a castle or possibly a former city wall. The wall could be more modern than either. The important point is that Portugal was born here in Guimaraes because it was the first capital of Portugal and the birthplace of King Afonso Henriques in 1112 and he vanquished The Moors in 1139 at the battle of Ourique, after which he was proclaimed King of Portugal by his troops.
Even with 35°C its a very nice and welcoming small place to visit
Lovely historical area to sit amongst the trees and watch all.
