This is one of my favorite spots around Auckland and I love to bring here my guests from overseas. There is unique and at the same time common for New Zealand view which is breathtaking in any weather plus a nice beach nearby for swimming, surfing or just chilling. The footpath to lookout points is well maintained and seem pretty safe although it can get wet in the beginning when tide is high.

The super soft black sand beach is magnificent. The tide was going out when we got there so we didn't get to see the blowhole in action, but I did climb down inside safely. There were crabs and green lipped mussels and sea stars galore. So nice and peaceful. Climbing up to the gannet nesting area would not be easy for those with accessibility needs, but the climb is rewarding. Technically the gannets are not meant to be home during winter, but there were hundreds of nested pairs here already. There is ample signage to teach you about the birds. They are not shy or afraid of humans (as they have no need to be, since we are not a natural predator for them). Please do not feed them or interfere with their nests. These beautiful birds are thriving without our assistance or interference. Feeding them will only change their behaviour unnaturally.

For bird lovers, this is a must do when in Auckland. Muriwai is a beautiful area, it’s well worth the drive. You can get really close to the gannet colony and the scenery is ideal for some photography. There are a number of view points to see the birds from different angles. There are also a number of stairs to reach them. Just be prepared for the smell!

This place takes my breath away in every visit. One of the best locations to witness the sunset. If you are visiting Auckland, be sure to include this place on your list. A bit of a drive from all the hustle and bustle and you are rewarded with amazing views.
