Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, California, USA
Spectacular views at the dam and on the drive in/out. No crowds when we went, only ran into 4 people. Highly recommend.
Such a wonderful place to explore away from the hustle and bustle of Yosemite Valley. Not too crowded even on Fourth of July weekend!
Hiking across the dam to the falls is a beautiful and relatively easy hike. Be warned, it’s full sun the whole time and fairly highly traveled. I arrived early and had a pleasant hike out, but the return was bordering on crowded. Mostly the trail is easy to find. Heck, you’re just going around the edge of a lake! Plenty of wildflowers and butterflies in early July.
Want to experience Yosemite without the crowds? Come to Hetch Hetcy. End of April is so beautiful with the waterfalls.
I was super excited to come here. We were here in mid August. It was not like the Yosemite valley. It was super hot and when we went there was no shade for much of the trail. Walking over the damn and walking through the tunnel were cool. The trail was hot and the first waterfall was no longer flowing. We weren’t as impressed as the valley. Maybe it’s just when we went.
