For a free museum, the Frye Museum is a great place to spend a few hours. I found out about the Frye Museum through a Seattle recommendations thread online, and mostly only went because it was free. Overall, I was impressed by the exhibits I saw there, as well as the number of exhibits on display. My favorite exhibit seemed to be perennial. Essentially, the back room of the museum is filled with different paintings that were owned by the Frye family. I really liked the compilation of the paintings and how they were all placed so closely together to create an immersive experience. I had never seen a museum put so much material so close together, and it was an interesting pivot from the minimalist exhibits that are popular with most museums.
If memory serves me, and it doesn’t, I entered the salon in the evening during a thunder storm and the power went out. Grotesque faces laughed at me from the grand hallway. I suddenly found myself in a dark room glowing like blood. The faces of a thousand dead animals stared down at me, and I began sinking into the tile. In the nextroom, a film suddenly began playing and I became inexplicably hungry. In the gift shop, I thought of only magnets and hair ties. The torso of a bat glided above. That’s okay, I said to myself, my coat is already all wet. This may or may not have been a dream visit.
Visually stunning and emotionally moving pieces. Wish we could have explored more/longer, but our son was enjoying his echo a bit too much and we didn't want to disturb the patrons. I'm shocked this is a free museum. A definite must see!
amazing works of art here. happy this is a free museum. I think all Museums should be free. I really had a great time the other day
I like art a lot and visit local museums and galleries all the time. Frye Art Museum always has exciting exhibitions. You can see classical art and modern as well. I come here with children, so they can also be inspired and educated.
