If you take the ferry you won't regret it. It's highly recommend to purchase your ticket in advance. Once you get to the Island, take your time to explore the entire prison. I also suggest the audio tour (it's free and its available in many languages), it's very interesting and informative. It will give you another perspective and insight. Taking the audio tour and walking around 90% of the island will take you about 2 hours.

Visited 08/06/2019. This was by far one of the most amazing places I've been. First the views & foliage are post card worthy. I highly recomend you get the headset for the self guided tour. The voices are actual guards & prisoners telling you how things were from their perspective. The voices & stories are giving me goosebumps just thinking about it. The staff was excellent. The lady that done the demonstration of the opening & closing of the cell doors @345 was amazing! ***Warning, please buy tickets in advance. They sell out fast! Several people were begging for extra tickets. The night tours sell out even faster. Go early so you are not rushed and can explore at your leisure.

It's a truly interesting place full of history. I loved the tour are offered in different languages and they walk you through the whole thing. Listening to the experiences of the actual people that lived there it's something that adds a little more to it.

What a beautiful island! I got into the island around 6pm, just around sunset, and the view is amazing. Both the boat ride and the island tour are great photo opportunities. The boat goes around the island then docked, so you pretty much get the view of the entire island. I think I would do another tour in the morning next time because it doesn’t seem like you can just walk around the entire island freely. There is no eating and drinking on the island but they do sell food on the boat.

Way more interesting than what I was expecting! I am not used to historical tours, so I was a bit skeptic, but this visit comes out very nice and suggestive. I highly recommend to listen to as much stories as possible and take some time to walk around, especially if you can do it at night while everyone else is busy with tours.
