At 200 km north of Lisbon, the city of Coimbra is full of history & culture. The city is home to one of the oldest universities in the world, which contains the magnificent Joanine Library. You'll also see the entire University Complex, as well as the Monastery of Santa Cruz, authentic medieval houses, and the Roman archeological city of Conimbriga.
We will leave Lisbon early in the morning to enjoy the full day, arriving in Coimbra after a roughly 2-hour drive, during which we'll make a small pit stop for a coffee break.
Upon arriving in Coimbra, we will visit the historical university, one of the oldest in the world, with the beautiful Joanine Library in Baroque style that dates back to the beginning of the 18th century. The tour will continue to the center of Coimbra, and to the Monastery of Santa Clara, the resting place of Portugal's first king, D. Afonso Henriques. The monastery was founded in 1131, but completely reconstructed in the first half of 16th. before leaving Coimbra, we'll also make some time to walk around and enjoy a bite to eat.
In the afternoon, we will visit the large Roman archaeological site of Conimbriga, which developed between the 1st to 3rd centuries. It is well known due to its conservation status, and by the existing mosaics. Classified as National Monument since 1910, Conimbriga makes guests feel like they're almost traveling back in time.
