This is a very unusual and mystic tour. You can rest from crowds during the night time and get to know more about the Portuguese Inquisition. The tour in Sintra is interesting from the historical perspective and your experienced guide will help you not to miss the details.
You will meet the Historian Miguel Boim early in the night near Sintra's Historic Centre. From there will begin your journey to the past.
This night walk has around 4 kilometers and lasts up to 4 hours. It's mostly done around Sintra's Historic Centre (you'll experience some hidden corners of the dark of the mountain at one point) and it intends for you to feel how the Inquisition was felt in Sintra, as well as its normal procedures and "celebrations" in Lisbon (since Sintra processes were connected to Lisbon's Inquisition court and prison.)
You will also observe some monuments (from the outside), such as the Royal Palace, Quinta da Regaleira, Pena Palace, Seteais Palace, and a few others.
In the region, all the open cases would converge on Lisbon's Inquisition court. The news that arrived from Lisbon were sometimes surprising. And here, in the village of Sintra, people eagerly awaited for the Auto de Fé in the Kingdom's capital. But the processes, the reports, and stories, the atmosphere in which people were living, all of these bring light into a series of shadows created by fantasy, while at the same time it raises the veil behind which some of those stories hide in the historical past, far superior to any fiction.
The habits and the customs, the delations and denouncements, & all of the stories enveloped in the nocturnal atmosphere of one of the most propitious places to let the mind travel into the past will be delivered to you via the words of Historian Miguel Boim. Needless to say, you may feel free to ask any questions you may have in relation to Sintra's History.
The effort implied in this night walk is equivalent to spending a whole afternoon strolling around Sintra, with its ups and downs. In this specific theme, you'll be standing longer than in other walks/themes, given that the Inquisition theme is a very dense one.
We will end our night walk at Sintra's Historic Centre, where you'll then have the chance to feel its nocturnal tranquility.
