It has some endemic flora and fauna species, such as salamanders (Bolitoglossa mombachoensis), orchids (Maxillaria mombachoensis), butterflies (Napeogenes tolossa, mombachoensis). The last eruption of this volcano was in the year 1570 causing an avalanche of the northeast side of the crater and the formation of 365 small volcanic islands, well known as the islets of Lake Nicaragua.
The volcano has a height of 1,344 meters. The natural reserve is one of the 78 protected areas of Nicaragua.
