About Netherlands

Netherlands in a nutshell

The Netherlands is a country in the northwest of Europe. It shares a border with Belgium and Germany and has a coast on the North Sea. The country’s name is in reference to the low land. In fact, approximately a third of the nation’s land is below sea level.

In the 1800s the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg declared independence from France and formed what was known as the Kingdom of the Netherlands, but this kingdom would only last a couple of decades as each country claimed independence in the years that followed.

Why is Netherlands so popular to visit?

The Netherlands has become quite the European destination, attracting the young and the old and couples and solo backpackers. Given its small size, it’s fairly easy to get around. Not only is it easy to get around the country itself, but it’s also effortless to explore the cities because of the ingenious cycling paths. The cycling culture in and of itself is actually a main attraction. Other visitors are intrigued by the millions (yes, millions!) of tulips that bloom every May.
