If you come to experience the desert, it's great. GO by 4x4, camels are an highly overrated tourist attraction. Don't go there for sunset and sunrise. *** If you really want the see the stars, bare in mind to check when it is new moon! With full moon there is nothing to look at.

Although being conquered by mass tourism, this small (30km long, 7km large) dune area is a natural jewel, with the gorgeous orange sand. Definitely worth coming if you have time or if on your way. Tours from Marrakech and Fez seem to lead to a lot of frustration among travellers, so go with this solution only if you are looking for the easiest solution and don't mind having 50 people around you in the desert. If going for something not all-inclusive and very cheap, keep in mind that you'll be taken to restaurants that charge around the double of the normal price, and be forced to stop in commercial spots to finance the tour. I preferred to prioritize freedom and intimacy. I rented a car and I went to Hassilabled, 5km from Merzouga and found a tour for me and my friend. We were only 2 people for the desert crossing with the camel's and 4 at the bivouac (matress with blankets, no tent cause it was warm enough and we could see the stars). We couldn't see other camp around us, but the (not so many for us) ATVs in the morning reminded us that we weren't alone. As of 2019, permanent camps inside de desert are forbidden (only bivouac), so there are apparently 3 types of "tours" : The first and cheapest option takes you at the foot of the dunes to sleep after a return trip in the desert with camels. The second option is going into the dunes with camels (0:40 to 1:30 depending on how "remote" they go), overnight in bivouac (matress and possibly small tent), and come back with the same camels the day after. The third option involves luxury camps located on the other side of the dunes area (so not in the middle of the dunes) but I don't know much about the details. Taking 2 nights instead of one doesn't mean a more remote location since the dunes desert is max 7km long. The second option is your best bet for a more remote and "cool" experience, but compare and choose your tour wisely if you don't want to end up in DisneyLand. What mostly differs is where exactly in the dunes desert you go and with how many other people around (ask, ask and ask again).
