Koyasan, Koya, Ito District, Wakayama 648-0211, Japan
A very special place. If you're even remotely considering including Koyasan in your trip, please invest the time. It will be good for the soul. Thank you, Monk Nori for your hospitality and knowledge!
The walk through this ancient cemetery is both a humbling and spiritual experience. The stonework, the massive trees, the mosses; it connects life, death, humanity, and nature. A walk though during daylight was incredible, but I can only imagine how much more intense it would be on a misty night with the lanterns lighting the pathway. This is one of the highlights of my trip.
Another not to be missed piece of beautiful Japanese Heritage. The travel to this place is not as difficult as it seems and the monasteries are so welcoming and beautiful. The cemetary will bring you a sense of deep peace and stillness.
It is definitely worth taking the longer path through Okunoin cemetary from Okunoin Guchi (bus stop #11) all the way to Kobodaishi Gobyo Mausoleum. It is not a physically demanding walk but the sheer majesty of the tall trees and the visual impact of the many memorials will take your breath away.
Just amazing! If you are in the area, you have to go to this place.
