The National Museum of Art is an interesting museum to visit even if you are from the Western half of the world. To learn of the museum's inception and purpose leads to more understanding of modern day Japan, plus the collections and special exhibits are curated very well. If you enjoy art, plan on visiting.
Was very lucky to catch the special exhibition for "Matsukata Collection" which ends tomorrow!! Took around three hours and a half to go through the 150+ pieces of the collection, about 20 minutes of which only to stand in awe and reverence in front of Monet's haunting Water Lillies - Reflections of Weeping Willows, desperately trying to absorb as much as I could from its beauty and peace. A must visit when in Tokyo.
I was absolutely blown away by this collection! I’m from Australia, so maybe people from Europe won’t find the collection as impressive as their galleries, but they have several wonderful Monet’s (I cried looking at the restored lost water lillies) and more Rodin sculptures than I’ve seen in once place outside of the Rodin museum in Paris. Definitely worth the visit, and I would happily visit again.
Excellent museum. Brilliant selection of artists. easy access.
A museum not to be missed I'm lucky to visit Matsukata Collection which will end Sep. 23
