Modern building with an easy to follow route through a fascinating range of exhibits. We particularly enjoyed the paleolithic artifacts including arrow heads and stone tools. The 1st floor exhibits included life size statues and the 2nd floor displayed scrolls about various stories. A great place to visit for a couple of hours on a very warm day in Kyoto.
Kyoto National Museum is amazing. Wonderful collections. We were fortunate to visit on an open free access day.
Like most places in Japan, this museum is exceptionally cheap to visit. The grounds are absolutely stunning and there’s major works on at the moment to replace and upgrade the exhibitions. Nice place to sit and escape the city whilst you’re exploring Kyoto 🤗
The website and Google maps don't show when special exhibits are on (not open to public) so we were not able to visit unfortunately. Perhaps worth calling in advance to confirm and save yourself the commute
We came on a rainy day and found out that the museum is closed. Said it is open only for organized groups. This was not mentioned on their site. I really don't understand how I can know this as a tourist before I arrive.
