Cover more ground as you journey by jeep to Iceland's most powerful and picturesque natural wonders.
Jump aboard, for this once-in-a-lifetime trip to Þórsmörk, the ‘valley of Thor’. Taken in a super-jeep, designed with your comfort in mind, and with a maximum of six persons, this excursion promises to be as intimate as it will be exhilarating.
You will be picked up from your Reykjavík accommodation, or a prearranged meeting point, for an 8.30 am departure, before heading straight out on your sightseeing adventure. The drive to Þórsmörk is approximately two and a half hours, and the route is stunning, passing through many quaint villages, by beautiful mountains, and near incredible waterfalls. You will stop to see some of the latter.
First up is Seljalandsfoss, a stunning falls you can walk all the way around; following that, you head over to Gljúfrabúi, which is hidden in a ravine and breath-taking at first sight. You will also have a stop to see the stretching tongue of the glacier Gígjökull, which often creates a serene glacier lagoon.
Gígjökull is not the only glacier you will see, however; Þórsmörk is sheltered by three of them. When you reach this incredible part of the country, famous for its beautiful forests, craggy peaks and trickling rivers and brooks, you will not be able to miss Tindfjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull, or the notorious Eyjafjallajökull, which erupted in 2010 with a disastrous effect on air-travel. These towering glaciers help to shelter Þórsmörk from Iceland's fierce weather, making your visit here as pleasant as possible.
You are sure to get the best views of this incredible region, so you are left in no doubt as to why it was named after the most powerful of the Old Norse Gods. Once within Þórsmörk, you will take a 45-minute hike up the mountain Valahnúkur; from here, you will have a spectacular panorama of the Highlands, which is sure to stay with you for life.
