The Ice Cave Under The Volcano - Katla Icecave Tour

The tour will start in Reykjavík and take you along the enchanting south coast. You will pass charming little towns and rivers with mountains on one side and sea on the other before reaching Vík. There the last participants will be picked up and we keep on going east until making an unexpected turn to the left side, off the ring road one and onto a rural road only passable by our Super Jeeps. The vista is stunning, with mountains and glaciers all around, and the trails just get rougher and tougher. The drive is a true adventure and the landscape is truly astonishing!

After an exciting drive, we will come to a stop right in front of Kötlujökull glacier and straight away you will see the amazing glacier ice layers and blue colors. Now it’s time to put on our crampons and walk closer to the ice cave. Prepare to feel like you just walked into a movie scene as you go further inside the glacier. Everywhere you look, you will see glistening ice and snow that nature has so beautifully created for us to appreciate.

We walk around inside, taking our time to admire and let it all sink in before returning back out to the wonderland of the Kötlujökull mountains. We will walk around a little to see if the smaller ice caves are accessible before returning back to our enormous truck. On the way back we will first stop at Vík and then at both popular Skógafoss waterfall. This eerie fall is located in the beautiful Skógar area and is also the inspiration to dozens of folklore tales. You will see why as soon as you visit. We recommend to hike up the right side of the waterfall to see the troll’s face that stares at the waterfall for all eternity (after forgetting time and turning into stone while admiring Skógafoss). We will also stop at the stunning Seljalandsfoss waterfall, on the Seljalands River which flows all the way down from the famous volcano, Eyjafjallajökull!
