Explore the amazing black beaches, colossal waterfalls and other stunning sites on the Icelandic south coast on this day-trip from Reykjavik.
On this day-tour from Reykjavik, we'll travel along the amazing south coast of Iceland, characterized by volcanoes, black sand beaches and glaciers. You'll get the chance to walk behind the thundering veil of water at Seljalandsfoss waterfall and enjoy the incredible views from the top of Skógar Waterfall. We will visit the awe-inspiring black sand beach at Reynisfjara and stroll around in the charming village of Vík.
The tour starts with a drive through the lava fields and over the volcanoes in Hengill and down to the farmland on the coast line. On clear days you will see the Hekla Volcano and in the distance, the glacier coated Eyjafjalljökull Volcano rising above the coastal mountains at its base. Just a few kilometers off the coast line and easily glimpsed are the volcanic Vestmannaeyjar Islands, like broken teeth in the ocean.
Our first stop is at Sólheimajökull Glacier—a photographers delight—and we stop there on our way to Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, another picturesque spot. There, the waves crash on the black sands, where the jagged basalt sea stacks and the huge basalt column cave are sights that you will not forget any time soon.
Vík, which is the southernmost village in Iceland, is our third stop. Enjoy the small-town atmosphere at one of the most romantic towns of Iceland. Shop for local handwork or just enjoy the beautiful houses under the calming sound of the sea. After lunch at Vík, we head to the 200 ft (60 m) high Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, famous for the hidden pathway behind and around it. We then stop at the powerful Skógafoss Waterfall, where a short walk up a flight of stairs will reveal one of Iceland´s most scenic views, glaciers, volcanoes and black sand beaches.
