A once-in-a-lifetime trek up the majestic Högnhöfði. This is the highest peak of the region and grants unparalleled access to views of the surrounding Icelandic wilderness, including glimpses of the famous Golden Circle of Iceland.

What to expect?

Ever dreamed of hiking in the wilds of Iceland with a local guide who can give you a real insight into this enchanting country? Look no further than this hike up the mountain Högnhöfði. Located in Iceland’s famous Golden Circle, this mountain is the tallest in this region. The name ‘Högnhöfði’, meaning male cat head in English, originates from the fact that by looking westwards from the summit, one is able to see the ears and head of a cat! Our hike will begin roughly 250 meters above sea level and then wind its way up to the summit which is just over 1000 meters high. Along the way your guide will point out some interesting sights and tell some stories about the local area. The terrain in this vicinity is quite varied and you will get the chance to also explore the beautiful area known as Brúarárskörð while we make our way to the summit.

Brúarárskörð is a great canyon between Högnhöfði and Rauðafell. The canyon is about 3-4 km long and the vertical drop from the start to the end is about 200 m (660ft) which puts it among the deepest canyons on Iceland. The river Búará, which originates in the canyon, cascaes down the steep rocky surface.

Expect a few stops along the way for snack/water breaks, there are no rivers during this trek so ensure you bring ample water. Upon reaching the summit you are greeted first by a gorgeous panorama of the Icelandic countryside so make sure to bring your camera! If the weather permits, there is the possibility of hiking further up to the smaller mountain Strokkur to gain a better view over Brúarárskörð.

The total distance covered by this hike is about 15km. The total duration of the hike is about 6-7 hours starting from Reykholt.
