Watch the water cascade from the heavens in this divine destination tour to this mythical Icelandic natural wonder.
Our tour to Goðafoss has been a bestseller for many years. The 2,5 hour tour takes you up close to one of the most beautiful falls in Iceland. Its unique bow shape along with the lava rock surrounding make it a must see on your trip to North Iceland!
Goðafoss is in the glacial river Skjálfandafljót and is one of Iceland´s great waterfalls. There are a number of waterfalls in this same river; Ullarfoss, Barnafoss, Hrafnabjargarfoss and Aldeyjarfoss.
Goðafoss plays a large part in Icelandic history. The legend tells of a local chieftain Þorgeir, who threw statues of the pagan gods into a waterfall after the nation became Christians. The name Goðafoss means waterfall of the gods.
The lava covering most of the river valley is more then 8000 years old and came from the mountain Trölladyngja in the highland. The thin layer of soil on top of the lava is vulnerable and the most common plants to grow there are dwarf shrubs, lichen and moss. In the canyon it is possible to see magnificent potholes and basalt columns.
We give you plenty of time to explore the waterfall and surrounding area up close. A restaurant and a souvenir shop are located near the falls. The first bridge across the river near Goðafoss was built the year 1882. The next one to be built was in the year 1930, it has now been rebuilt as a walking bridge offering a different view of Goðafoss.
