Admire the wondrous natural world of Iceland through the window in this back country road trip adventure unlike any other.
This journey will take us from Isafjordur through an underground tunnel to Önundarfjörður and to the beautiful village Þingeyri. Then we‘ll make our way up the steep and narrow Hrafnseyrarheiði Heath road to Arnarfjordur. On route 622 we‘ll drive by the farm Auðkúla, where there is a large colony of Eider Ducks during the breeding season. Then onward to Fossdalur valley, along this winding dirt road with spectacularly scenic shoreline on one hand , and breath taking mountain range, often referred to as „The Westfjord Alps“ on the other.
We‘ll drive up the Fossdalur valley along Mt Kaldbakur, Westfjords highest mountain (998m) over the mountain pass Kvennaskarð to Kirkjubólsdalur valley to Þingeyri and back to Isafjordur. It‘s easy to see why it‘s impossible to travel these mountain passes by car, 6-7 months of the year.
