Join in on a sensationally scenic drive through the Icelandic desert, as you venture through rocky roads and craters in an exploration of the isolated lands of Askja.
Departure is from Mývatnsstofa (the Information Center in the Mývatn area, next to the supermarket in village Reykjahlíð).
The route that we take is the one from Lake Mývatn. We will hop in a super-van or 4x4 vehicle for the Askja tour and take the first road which runs towards the crater of Hrossabrg. From there, we make a turn to road F88 (gravel road), then cross the rivers of Grafarlandaá and Lindá, as well as making a stop in the nature reserve Herðubreiðarlindir (near mt. Herðubreið).
Finally, we head to Dyngjufjöll, where the main destinations are the canyon Drekagil and the caldera Askja. After parking by Vikraborgir (craters), we walk to the lake of Askja and the crater Víti which is about 2.4 km one way.
