About Hungary

Hungary in a nutshell

Hungary is a Central European country that is landlocked and borders seven countries. The country has a population of 10 million people, 70 percent of which live in urban areas.

Hungary was once home to a number of empires including the Roman empire and the Austria-Hungarian Empire. Following World War II, the country fell under communist rule until 1990 when the country held its first democratic elections.

Why is Hungary so popular to visit?

Hungary is relatively cheap compared to other European countries, which makes it an attractive option for those looking to experience Europe without spending a fortune. Its proximity to other popular countries like Austria and Croatia makes it an easy addition to the itinerary. The capital city is undoubtedly one of the country’s main draws, offering tourists the perfect blend of culture, history and fun. The country is also known for its thermal baths, cuisine and architecture.

Things to do in Hungary

Budapest is Hungary’s capital city and is usually the primary reason people want to visit the country. Top sights include the Hungarian State Opera House, Buda Castle and St Stephen's Basilica. Hungary’s most iconic and opulent building, the Hungarian Parliament Building, is truly an architectural masterpiece. After a day of sightseeing, tourists enjoy relaxing in the Széchenyi Thermal Baths. Of course, there’s an entire country outside of Budapest just waiting to be explored. Lake Balaton is known for water sports and the nearby wineries. While there are a number of vineyards scattered throughout the country, the Tokaj region is one of the country’s most popular wine regions and is known for producing dessert wine.

What is the best time of year to visit Iceland?

Like many spots in Europe, Hungary’s high season is during the summer months, specifically July and August when the temperatures are at their highests. Lake Balaton is ideal during this time, but also the most crowded. Late spring and early autumn are generally fantastic times to visit Hungary since the weather is mild and there are fewer visitors. Winter is not a great time to see the country, with the exception of Christmastime when places like Budapest transform into winter wonderlands filled with Christmas markets and decorative lights.
