Our tour begins in the leafy village of Karavas in the north-east of Kythira. We will make a short stop to take photos, and visit the village’s small, yet famous bakery.
We will travel south to the center of the island, and visit Mitata, the village that was badly damaged by the 6.9 Richter earthquake in 2006.
On our arrival, we will have an optional visit to the old olive press Fava’s Liotrivi. This was one of the oldest olive presses on the island, and it has been recently renovated by Eleni Protopsalti and Kostas Pavlakis, the grandchildren of the original owner. Here you can learn about the history of olive oil production on Kythira, and watch a short time-lapse video of how the press was rebuilt. You can also purchase some of the local Kytherian products or even some of the recipe books written by Mr. Pavlakis that include traditional Kytherian recipes.
