Velebit Nature Park is 145 km long mountain range, the largest Natural Park in Croatia. In 1978 it is included in UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
**" Majstorska cesta" **macadam road is the first road that connected continental Croatia and Dalmatia region, was built 1832 and it is 41 km long. Josip J. Knežić worked on this road entire 11 years. It is inscribed in the Croatian List of protected cultural goods.
Tulove grede (Tulo’s Rafters) are conglomerate of white limestone cliffs looking like crown rising from the body of a massive peak. Unique landscape and its rough beauty served as filming location for many movies, definitely the most famous are films about Winnetou – fictive Indian chief, based on Karl May’s novels. Tulo’s rafters are known as a mountain where Indian chief Winnetou died, and after the death of the famous actor Pierre Brice, its wife spilled its ashes on this magnificent peak.

Departure from Zadar towards Zrmanja Canyon and Velebit mountain Nature Park

After 40 minutes long drive, arrival to the first location - magnificent viewpoint above Zrmanja Canyon. Zrmanja river flows through wild and rocky landscape and creates magnificent canyon which is more than 200 meters deep. This plateau served as a filming location for numerous movie scenes about Indian chief Winnetou based on Karl May’s novels.

Within arrival to Velebit's most attractive mountain peak, Tulove grede (Tulo’s rafters in eng.) starts 1,5 hour long climb to the top with pauses. At the top, you will have 30-40 minutes long pause to rest and enjoy in breathtaking panorama view of Zadar hinterland and archipelago from 1100 meters height. After that follows downhill hike to the bottom of the peak and return to Zadar.
