Explore all the filming locations in Croatia for the popular HBO show Game Of Thrones.

As the new season is starting it's a good idea to dust off your Game Of Thrones knowledge and take a look at some of the filming locations that were used during shooting of the episodes. For each place you can also find information about in which season and episode this location is featured. S03E04 translates to Season 3, episode 4.

Dubrovnik

Most of the scenes in King's Landing were filmed in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Dubrovnik is a city that is on the adriatic sea and is a part of UNESCO list of world heritage sites. No special measures were necessary for scenery or much special effects to play the fortified port city of King’s landing.

This can be seen in multiple episodes where the Red keep is shown. Here are some of the tours that are available if you want a tour of Dubrovnik:

Old Town S01, S02, S03, S04, S05, S06, S07

This is used for most of the shots of King´s Landing, where the Maestor Baelor Septor is CGID in, the Red Keep is and where Cersei had her walk of atonement (St Dominika Street, season 5 episode 10) before she blew the Septor up.

Walls of Dubrovnik S02E01,S02E08, S07E01

They can also be spotted in the new trailer for season 8 when the Golden Company is arriving. There is a shot of them when the Golden Cloaks are killing Robert´s bastards in the start of season 2. Varys and Tyrion also have a great talk here in episode 8 in season 2 about Tyrion being hand of the king and how to handle it.

Harbor in King's Landing - Pile Bay S03E01

This is the harbor in Dubrovnik, the producers didn't have to change anything for when they used it in the series as it looked so authentic. One of the scenes that take place here is where Petyr Baelish and Sansa have a talk with Shae looking at them being worried about Sansa.

Trsteno Arboretum S0302, S0304, S0307, S03E10, S0401, S0402

The garden where Queen Margaery and the Queen of Thorns have a talk with Sansa about Joffrey and how he really is. Earlier Sansa was walking with Loras Tyrell in the same garden to the queens. Used for multiple scenes in season 3 and 4.

Fort Lovrijenac S02E01

The tournament for Joffrey’s name day was held in that Fort. Where Sir Dontos the Red was almost killed for being drunk but saved by Sansa by asking Joffrey to spare him. It was also used for that great moment Cersei has with Petyr Baelish to show him what power really is, “Power is power”.

House of the Undying - Minceta Tower S02E10

Minceta tower was used as the House of the Undying. This is an strong fort located in the north wall ending and was originally built in 1319.  Here Daenerys went to find her dragons after they were stolen from her by the warlocks.

Fortress of Kliss S04,S05,S06

Fortress of Kliss is medieval fortress near Split. It was built by a Illyrian tribe Dalmatae and became a royal castle for many Croatian Kings. This is used as the location for the City of Mereen. Can be seen in season 4, 5 and 6 in multiple scenes.

Diocletian’s Palace S04E10, S05E01,S05E05

Diocletian’s palace is an ancient castle built for the Roman Emperor Diocletian. The basement was used as the vault where Daenerys kept her dragons when she needed to lock them up after Drogon ate a boy outside of Mereen. This is also where Tyrion had his scene with Rhaegal and Viserion when he unchained them as dragons don´t do well in captivity.

Hotel Belvedere

This is a hotel located outside of Dubrovnik which served as the location for the fight between the viper and the mountain for the life of Tyrion after being accused of murdering King Joffrey.

Lokrum Island S02E05

This island was used for a few shots but can be seen when Daenerys is socalicing with the people from Qarth in episode 5 in Season 2 there she also has to stop her guards from stealing.

Trogir S02E04,S02E06,S02E07

Trogir´s old town was used as the trading harbour of of Qarth where Daenerys entered in season 2 after wondering the desert for quite some time. It also appeared in episode 6 when Daneryes finds her guards dead and her dragons gone. The St. Dominic's monastery was also used as filming location for some of the scenes.

Sibenik S05E09

This renaissance city was introduced as the City of Braavos in season 5. The Iron bank was set as St James Cathedral as the most powerful bank in the Game of Thrones world.
